This essay, which appears in Ekstasis Magazine, examines photographs of the homeless made by the contemporary artist Andres Serrano. I write about this work inspired by the call to see Christ in "the other". Jesus taught us that we must love our neighbor as ourselves. In the context of our nation's homeless crisis, Serrano's beautiful and ennobling portraits provide new inspiration to step out of our familiar paths and engage with those unlike ourselves.
